Course Overview

IALA was initially known as the International Association of Lighthouse Authorities but is now known as the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities. It is a non-profit international association that provides nautical expertise and advice worldwide. It encourages members to work together to match aids to navigation worldwide and to ensure that movement of vessels are safe and cost-effective, while simultaneously protecting the environment. To ensure seamless and smooth operations at such a large scale, IALA establishes committees consisting of experts from across the globe. These committees work together to develop recommendations regarding technologies and best practices. One of the major game-changing projects or proposals of IALA is the IALA Maritime Buoyage System, which has been adopted by all major maritime nations across the world. The aim of this system is to help mariners, navigating anywhere in the world, check position and make changes, if needed, to avoid hazards and danger without fear of ambiguity. The system has seen changes over time as a result of innovation and advancement of technology. One of the recent changes has been the inclusion of aids to navigation for improving navigational safety. The system includes a unified marking arrangement, which, for simplicity, has been divided into two regions. Region A includes part of the Atlantic Ocean, Africa, Europe, some parts of Asia, the Middle East, Australia, parts of the Pacific Ocean and New Zealand. Region B includes North, Central and South America; Japan; North and South Korea and the Philippines. Development of a uniform system of buoyage worldwide was of high priority for safe navigation at sea. In this, buoys and beacons were indispensable in guiding mariners at sea. While there is not much difference between both regions when it comes to marks signalling danger and other information, the colour and meaning of lateral marks is reversed across regions.

This Zoe training course will empower you with detailed information and knowledge about the IALA Maritime Buoyage System. The experience and knowledge gained through this course will help you assist your organisation in completely understanding and adhering to the information and guidance provided by the Maritime Buoyage System for its own safety and well-being. This course will also help you understand the minutest yet most important details of the buoyage system to make optimal use of this helpful service to marine organisations. Furthermore, this course will provide you the necessary exposure, confidence and experience to partake in activities of IALA, including innovation, critical decision making, suggestions, etc., thus providing you more avenues for career progression and development beyond one’s organisation.
