Course Overview

MLC, also known as Maritime Labour Convention, is an international labour convention adopted by the International Labour Organisation (ILO). MLC 2006 recommends minimum working and living standards for all seafarers.

Widely known as seafarers’ bill of rights, MLC 2006 was adopted by the government, employer and worker representatives at the ILO conference in February 2006. MLC 2006 is unique because it aims to achieve decent work for seafarers and to secure economic interests through fair competition for quality ship owners.

Besides establishing decent working and living conditions for all seafarers worldwide, the overall objectives of MLC 2006 include ensuring commitment of governments and ship owners towards better working and living conditions for seafarers; putting in place control and enforcement mechanisms to ensure fair competition; setting minimum required standards such as employment conditions, accommodation, recreation facilities, food and catering, health and medical care; etc.

The convention has adopted and included regulations of other renowned international organisations from different spheres and areas of focus.

Effective national implementation of MLC 2006 could result in decent employment and social conditions for seafarers and will support the safety and security and environmental protection objectives of certain organisations by improving shipping practices and conventions.

MLC 2006 is considered to mark a new era for standard-setting activities of ILO, specifically in the marine sector. It has been designed to be globally applicable, easily understandable, readily updatable and easily enforceable.

This Zoe training course will empower you with complete information and knowledge about MLC 2006. Further, this course will help you analyse your organisation’s practices, policies and guidelines with respect to working and living conditions of employees (seafarers) and make amendments, where necessary, to ensure compliance with universally recognised and accepted standards.

The ILO Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) course content provides you detailed understanding and in-depth information of the regulations within the convention to help you inspect specific areas of focus for standard adherence and compliance.

The knowledge, experience and exposure gained through this course will help you undertake specialised, sensitive roles in setting standards and implementing the same for seafarers and various aspects of their work and lives, thus providing you multiple opportunities and avenues to demonstrate skill and talent and foster quicker career growth and progression.
